Like most passengers, those using T2 won’t necessarily
question how there’s a ready supply of trolleys available where and when they’re
needed.
But
that supply will be dependent on a significant feat of engineering carried out
at the new terminal last weekend.Over
three nights of the Bank Holiday, T2’s so-called Paternoster Lift – dedicated to
distributing trolleys around the terminal’s various levels - was hoisted into
place by a special 200 tonne crane.
The
Paternoster lift itself was manufactured in the Czech Republic and assembled
close to the Airport by Mercury Engineering into twelve separate
components.These
components, each weighing between 6,000 and 12,000 kilograms, were then trucked
slowly to the T2 site and lifted by the crane, nearly 50 meters into the air
over the roof of T2.
They
were then lowered delicately into the waiting 26 meter lift shaft at the
Terminal 1 end of T2 close to its baggage hall. Once in place, the components
were then re-assembled into one unit. T2’s
Paternoster lift will have storage and distribution capacity for 400 trolleys.
