The Dublin Airport
Authority (DAA) has become the first company in Ireland to use a new
environmentally friendly type of construction hoarding.
The new construction hoarding, which is being used at the Terminal 2 site, is made from recycled plastic and will itself be recycled after use.
The plastic hoarding is made from recycled industrial PVC and is more environmentally friendly than timber, which is typically used for construction site hoardings.
Timber hoardings have little value and often end up in landfill sites at the end of a project. But the new plastic hoarding is durable and re-usable and is also 100% recyclable.
Once the T2 project is complete, the DAA has three options for the plastic hoarding. It can be re-used on another construction project at the airport, sold on to another company in the Irish construction sector or sold back to the supplier - Yorkshire firm Ecogenik - which will re-use it or recycle it into new plastic hoardings.
“During the building of T2 we intend to keep construction waste to a minimum and using this new type of hoarding will help us do that,” said Mark Foley, the DAA's Director of Capital Programmes.
The DAA will erect about 1.5km of plastic hoarding at the T2 site and the modular design of the system will allow the hoarding to be easily moved during the various phases of the project.
The T2 contract is British company Ecogenik’s first export order. The firm was set up last year and has recently supplied plastic construction hoardings to British airports such as Heathrow and Manchester.
