The first area of new concrete apron has been poured at the Pier E site. Pier E is a new boarding gate facility being built by the DAA as part of the T2 project as it requires new concrete apron areas for aircraft parking at each gate.
The first test area of new pavement quality concrete was poured on March 18 by T2 apron works contractor Fitzpatrick. Pouring of concrete is the final part of the process of apron construction. Before new concrete can be laid, new drainage and ducting has to be built and a layer of lean mix, which is a combination of stone and cement, also has to be installed. At the Pier E site, workers are also building a new fuel hydrant system under the apron.
With the test concrete complete, the coming days will see the start of a huge job out on the apron at the Pier E site, as about 1,000 cubic metres of concrete is due to be poured. The Pier E site is currently airside, but following the initial apron works, the entire construction site will move landside. The Pier E boarding gate facility is 60% larger than Pier D and will have parking for up to 19 short-haul aircraft.
